This is why I read.
And this is why I started Hardcore Literature.
Why do you read?
This Is Why I Read
Notes from the video:
- Reading sharpens your empathy
- Literature gives a great deal of joy
- A book is the soul of another human being
- You can predict the future by reading history
- Reading lets you live a thousand lives in one
- You can change the world by changing yourself
- We write our era and communicate across time
- We need more conscious reading, no matter what we read
- Thoughts are neither true nor false, rather helpful or harmful
- We share wine, films, music with friends. So why not books?
- There’s no decent book clubs in this world anymore – let’s start one
- There’s nothing wrong with being selfish, but reading is ultimately selfless
- Reading should not always be solitary, as the greatest joy is from community
- In literature lies light to guide us out of the self-imposed shackles of victimisation
- What keeps me awake at night: Do people actually give a shit about literature anymore?
- We have no patience anymore – just binge this, binge that, getting depressed from social media
- We’re only having whatever hateful conversation that the media and politicians want us to talk about
Upcoming passion projects for Hardcore Literature:
- Shakespeare Lecture Series: Every Play Discussed
- Every Poem from Robert Browning’s Men and Women Read Aloud
- Great Expectations Read Aloud Following Original Serialised Publication Dates
If you watched the video through to the end, you’ll have seen my call-to-action to get involved. I mean it.
